What the Service Panel Does
The panel is a steel enclosure with a hinged door. Inside, the main breaker or main lugs feed branch breakers. Each branch breaker protects one circuit. When a circuit overloads or faults, the breaker trips to the middle or OFF position to stop current before wiring overheats.
Everything except the utility feed itself can be shut off at the panel. That is why electricians start repair work by identifying the correct breaker and verifying power is dead at the device.
Labeling: The Feature That Saves Hours Later
Every breaker should identify the rooms or equipment it serves. Unlabeled Chicago bungalow panels force guesswork during outages and remodels. After any panel work, update labels so the next service call – or your own emergency shutoff – is accurate.
Shared two-flats and finished basements often have confusing subpanels. Keep a written map near the main panel if labels alone are not enough.
How to Reset a Tripped Breaker Safely
Move the lever fully to OFF, then back to ON. Do not hold a breaker in the ON position if it will not stay on – that is a fault signal, not a sticky switch.
If the same breaker trips again after a reset, unplug loads on that circuit and call an electrician. Repeated trips can mean an overload, a short, or a failing breaker. Treating trips as a nuisance is how heat damage starts.
Wire Size Must Match Breaker Rating
Breakers protect the wire. A breaker amperage must never exceed what the conductor is rated for. Oversized breakers on undersized wire are a classic fire hazard from DIY panel work and unpermitted remodeled kitchens.
If you are adding circuits, the panel may need spare slots, correct breaker types, and sometimes a service upgrade – not just a new receptacle run.
Aluminum Branch Wiring and Loose Lugs
Aluminum conductors expand and contract with heat more than copper. Loose lugs at the panel create hot spots and arcing. Do not open a live panel to torque connections yourself. A licensed electrician de-energizes equipment and uses the correct torque specs and devices for aluminum when required.
Clearance and Access Rules Matter
Keep storage, shelving, and laundry piles away from the panel face. Working space in front of the panel is a safety requirement – blocked panels delay emergency shutoff and fail inspection during sales and renovations.

Homeowners can reset a clearly labeled breaker and note what was running when it tripped. Stop and call a pro for buzzing, burning smells, warm breakers, scorch marks, water intrusion, aluminum wiring, or panels that will not hold a reset.
